An In-Depth Review Of The JBL Clip 2: Looking At The Specs

One of the most common uses of PCs and smartphones today is multimedia consumption. Whether its binge movie watching or listening to music, there’s an increasingly large number of consumers who prefer using mobile devices to large TV screens. However, even with this convenience and portability, the audio output of these devices is quite average at best.

This is where wireless speakers come in. These fun, little gadgets connect to your laptops or mobile phones via Bluetooth for a more enhanced audio playback. The speakers are also portable meaning that you can carry them with you wherever you go.

One of the most outstanding Bluetooth speakers has been the JBL Clip 2. The Clip 2 is an upgraded model of the Clip Plus which offered great sound performance and style for its price range (under $50). The Clip 2 improves all aspects of the previous version – including the rugged design, speaker size, sound quality, portability, and battery life.

Here’s a complete JBL Clip 2 review.

A Review of the JBL Clip 2

JBL Clip 2

What’s in the Box?

When unboxing a typical speaker, you’ll need to pull everything apart so that you can get a good glimpse at all the accessories that come with it. But you don’t have to do this with the JBL Clip 2 because all the accessories that matter (the 3.5mm audio cable and the carabiner) are built right into the wireless speaker.

Nonetheless, it does come with a user manual and warranty information.

Design and Build Quality

The JBL Clip 2 is as small as a hockey puck. The front part is covered with JBL’s signature woven fabric and the logo at the bottom. On the top of the speaker, there’s a triangular carabiner that’s attached to the clip by a silicone ring. If for some reason you wouldn’t want the carabiner attached, with a little fiddling, you can have it removed.

The back and sides of the speaker are covered with a soft rubber material that is gentle on hands and is fingerprint- and abrasion-resistant. Indented buttons seamlessly line around the circumference of the speaker. On the right side, there’s the Bluetooth pairing and power buttons with a Micro-USB charging plug between them.

With its flap closed, the JBL Clip 2 is IPX7 waterproof, meaning that you can submerge it in water for 30 straight minutes and it will still function well. This is, however, an increasingly common feature in many Bluetooth speakers today – but a welcomed one nonetheless.

It also comes in a number of beautiful colors including red, blue, black, grey, teal, and camo.

Speaker Performance

The JBL Clip 2 improves on an already impressive sound quality of the original Clip Plus by delivering good bass, brilliant mids, and impressive trebles with no distortion whatsoever.

The wireless speaker is good, especially on vocals, all thanks to the crisp and clear mid tones – something that many small wireless speakers lack. Whether you are into soft RnB, hip-hop, or metal rock, the JBL Clip 2 has no problem when it comes to satisfying your inner audiophile. It’ll produce a rich, detailed sound that you will enjoy through the years.

Well, it isn’t really much of a surprise that this speaker has a high-quality sound – it’s a JBL model for goodness sakes! However, if you are looking for a very powerful bass, you’ll need to get a speaker with a considerable passive radiator to enhance the low-ends.

Another weak point is the volume. The JBL Clip 2 maxes out only 80 decibels. This is loud enough for home use, but not adequate for a noisy pool party.

Nonetheless, for a Bluetooth speaker of this size and price range, it does a recommendable job. You can rely on it for your day-to-day use.

Battery Life

JBL improved the battery life of the Clip 2 model to 8 hours, from 5 hours on the previous model. At a low-to-moderate volume, the Clip 2 can last up to 10 hours. This extra bump in battery life makes this speaker quite reliable since it is actually usable for the most part of your day.

The Li-ion battery is inbuilt and not replaceable.

The JBL Clip 2 is compatible with Andriod, iOS, and Windows devices. Though the Bluetooth range is not stated, the signal will start to break up at around 50 feet from the source. This is a great improvement compared to its predecessors.

It doesn’t have a mobile app from where you can control it from, however, you can pair two Clip 2s together by holding the Bluetooth button on each unit for a few seconds, and enhance the sound performance.

The Clip 2 also comes with a speakerphone which makes communication easier and clearer.

The Verdict

Minor shortcomings aside, the JBL Clip 2 is a great Bluetooth speaker that you should definitely try out. It has great sound and is lightweight to take it with you outdoors.

If you are looking for a small, compact Bluetooth speaker, the Clip 2 is an attractive choice with small but very significant improvements over its predecessors.
